Small Non-Profits Working in the Nairobi Slums Making a Difference?

By: Lance Winslow

Many small organizations have volunteered to help out in the Nairobi Slums to help those in need, some of the poorest in Africa living under the worst conditions. One small group KENWA has helped 1743 children? Not just any children, orphans of HIV/AIDS victims.

That may seem like a lot but 1,743 is only the tiniest fraction of the total which was 14,000,000 in 2001, who knows what that number is today, orphans in need? It certainly is a great start and there are hundreds of such groups helping, but are they really making a dent? It obviously is not enough. It is not solving the problem or root cause, but it helps those individual children.

Helping the people in the Nairobi slums is a tricky business indeed and in some cases it may be causing more problems that it is helping. You see, there needs to be a total solution, not a band-aid. Unfortunately often the aid to the slums causes more people to show up for free services and help, expanding the slums and worsening the situation.

Some believe and have actually made statements that we need to cut Kenya off from all US Taxpayers money, as they say that the government is corrupt. In actuality it is perhaps less corrupt than other African Nations. Still we send $1.6 Billion in aid to Kenya and the slums are still there.

If we are to fix the slums or upgrade the living conditions there for those folks then we need to control that project, as they don't seem care to care and have actually made statements in fact they do not even want the slums there, do not consider it their responsibility for these illegal settlements.

The humanitarian crisis goes on, something needs to be done. I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.
