Smoking Is Killing Me

By: Eric Hartwell

Smoking is killing me. Yes, smoking is killing me. But I am not your ordinary smoker. I don't smoke 20 cigarettes per day and I don't buy loose tobacco .No, I am not that bad. I am a passive smoker. I smoke the exhaled, second-hand, putrid smoke of others.

I smoke it in bars. I smoke it in clubs. I smoke it in restaurants, diners, on sidewalks.

I have to avoid certain areas where other people smoke lest I should also be caught in their habit.

Wherever I go, I am smoking the waste of the lungs of others. And passive smoking has been linked with ill health and even death. The famous entertainer, Roy Castle, died through his years of passive smoking in clubs and bars. He was a nice guy. Yet the selfish fools that killed him had no concern for him or others. Only themselves.

I don't want to die prematurely although I am saddened to say that I have lived long enough for the years of passive smoking to have a detrimental effect. I look forward to July 07 when, in my country, public smoking is banned - at least in clubs, bars and restaurants. Hooray for the sensible people that concocted and followed through this law.

It may be too late to make any difference to me but it will certainly help my children's health. And, whatever, at least I can have a meal or a drink without being surrounded by a cloud of smoke and stinking for days.
