Smoking and Impotence

By: Eric Hartwell

The adverse effect of smoking and the nicotine that comes with the habit to men’s impotence has received quite a stir worldwide. After decades of research and scientific studies, there is still a lack of reliable linkage between smoking and impotence among men. Despite of this, there is no doubt that the harmful substance that is taken in during smoking clogs the arteries that connects to the heart and to the male organs. This is the reason, why erectile dysfunction is being traced to cigarette and smoking impotence awareness is getting grounds.

Clinical studies show that nicotine blocks the veins that supplies blood to the male organs. Once this vein is clogged, men experience erectile dysfunction and the ability to produce reproductive genes. Hence, causing impotence. In addition to these findings, it was also noted that smoking among older men, increases the chances of impotency than with those smoking younger men. This is due to the fact that older men are more susceptible to other life conditions which contribute to impotence. These life conditions include work stress, physical fatigue and lack of physical exercise.

With this known facts, still, there is a growing number of men who are not affected by smoking impotence and would just not want to kick the smoking habit. Smoking impotence doesn’t seem to affect them despite numerous advertisement underlying the ill effects of smoking to the over all health of a person.

Or perhaps, tobacco advertisements should start rethinking their advertisement warning to include a disclaimer of smoking impotence. Instead of the usual Surgeon General Warning that smoking is bad for one’s health that are printed on cigarette packs, perhaps tobacco manufacturer should also include a statement regarding cigarette and smoking impotence. Something in the line of Surgeon Genera Warning: Smoking could kill you and your sperm. That would be an appropriate advertisement and might just pull the string for men to stop smoking.

But then again, the initiative to stop smoking and prevent smoking impotence still lies with men’s perception on male sexuality. There are still some backward nations which look at male supremacy and machismo as that with the capability to reproduce offspring. Some societies still look at the male’s capability to reproduce offspring and the capability to sexually please their female partners as a gauge to their sexual prominence. So, anti-smoking organizations might very well tap this backward perception and start promoting the idea that cigarette cause smoking impotence. If civic organizations promoting anti-smoking campaign could convince men about the adverse effect of smoking to their manhood, anti-smoking drives might win its battle. Imagine the million of pesos and the lives that will be saved if smoking will forever be gone and men would start living their life in a healthy manner. Economically, this may be on a negative side since tobacco industries are a high yielding business but then, the business loss may very well be compensated by the lives saved.
