Some List Builders Dream, Others Build

You may have a decent-sized list, but they just don't buy. Could you have the wrong list? How did you come by the folks who joined? Are they from sort of free advertising, or did you build them by placing ads in ezines? Do you know what they want? How do you know which items to sell them? All of these questions are important.

We'll discuss them in order.

First, how did you come by the folks who joined? If you're building a list from free traffic sources, chances are that your list won't be very responsive. Most people who use these are complete newbies, or they're just people who jump from program to program, looking to make their first million dollars. They don't buy because they bought into the myth that people find overnight riches, with no investment. They aren't business people and don't know that the first rule of business is that you have to spend money to make money. You're better off building a list somewhere where people are serious about building a business.

Though organic traffic is also free traffic, you'll have a broader range of clientèle. Some of them will understand the first rule of business and if you optimize your site for the search engines and get onto the first page for a good keyword, you will get traffic-a lot of it. And if people actually visit your site, rather than having it pass by their eyes, as with automatic traffic exchanges, they're more likely to sign up for your list because they're interested in what you're doing and want your products.

But what kind of products are they? I mean, if you have a list built around horses, don't try to sell the people on it a musical instrument. That would just be silly. They'll scratch their heads and it's almost 100% certain that they won't buy, unless of course, you have a horse-riding guitar player. I think that went out with color TV.

And do you know what your list wants? Have you asked them? I mean, how do you know what they want to buy, if you don't ask them? Some replies will give you ideas for new products to offer. Be sure to try the products yourself first and only sell the products that you enjoy. Never try to sell things you haven't tried because if you sell a bad product to your list, you'll lose their trust forever.

And let's talk about price. How much money do you need to make? If you need $5,000 a month, you'll have to make 1,000 sales every month with a $5 product, and this continues. A $10 product will require 500 sales. A $500 dollar product will require 10 sales, and so on. How many sales can you make and how hard do you want to work?

Also take into consideration the type of customer you have. Have you built a list of $5 customers? Or are they $5,000 customers. Decide who they are by offering products in their approximate price range. Let's say you start with a $47 product and make 10 sales. OK, good. Then, try a $97 product. Did your sales increase or decrease? If they stayed the same or if they went up, try a $197 product and so on. If they went down, then stick to $47 items.

But you can still make more with your buyers. Continue to offer them new products on your thank you page. They can be a one-time offer (OTO) or they can be just a good back-end product that's higher priced than the product they bought to begin with. So, Joe Smith buys your $47 product, and you offer him the $97 product on the back end. Right? OK, so if he buys the $97 product, offer him a $197 product and so on.

These are all important list maintenance ideas If you haven't started to build your list yet, first figure out, who you want them to be. Go to the places where people spend the kind of money you want to make. Ezine advertising is a good place to figure this out. Subscribe to a few and notice the products offered. If you want to build a $5,000-spender list and see $5,000 products, then advertise there. Send people to your squeeze page. But if your list is already started and your people just aren't responsive, sell them products they can afford. Then, start another list and find people who are willing to spend what you want to earn.
