Spirituality - Creating the Ultimate Connection

By: Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD

Humans need—physical, emotional and spiritual—sustenance to thrive. The majority of people need healing in all three.

The only way to create emotional/spiritual sustenance is through spirituality. Spirituality is God, One’s Creator, A Higher Power, Essence Greater than oneself—related science of developing and freeing this unseen innermost being—the core of us. Love creates, all else destroys. Love cannot co-exist with other premises simultaneously; therefore, God, One’s Creator, A Higher Power, Essence Greater than oneself is only love. The fly in the ointment of human existence verses in spiritual form—this unseen essence—is the "ego.” The ego is essential to navigate the vicissitudes in physical life. However, the ego is what gets us into trouble. The truth is: All life on earth serves the sole purpose of developing our spirituality to the point of being free of spiritual ignorance, free of selfish or destructive behavioral (ego) patterns, free to return to our eternal home. True spirituality leads to freedom in God, One’s Creator, A Higher Power, or an Essence Greater than oneself.

Creating time for one’s spirituality is important. Within certain parameters, jobs, home duties, children, family, friends, etc, we choose how we use our time. We simply forget or more importantly do no realize, that the choices on how we utilize our time regarding our spirituality are ours to make.

But how does one make the time to talk with God, One’s Creator, A Higher Power, or an Essence Greater than oneself? Some people go to their house of worship and/or practice rituals. These holy places, with stained glass, a multitude of flowers, some with incense and many with music engender a frame of mind, and contribute to our ability to focus, and pray our words for our personal period of time. This is not to imply that each of us needs to ‘own’ a physical piece of Holy ground in order to connect and communicate with our personal God, One’s Creator, A Higher Power, or an Essence Greater than oneself. We can make time wherever and whenever we chose—be it a park, backyard, walking, hiking, while cooking, cleaning, or in as obscure places as outer space, prison or a foxhole.

Most importantly, it is the space one creates in one’s mind, the space to consciously put aside other activities or thoughts to become our own Holy Ground. Some people prefer to create this space through meditation. However, formal meditation is unnecessary—one can create this space simply by choosing to do so.

Creating time for one’s spirituality may require changing a number of things, or it may mean limiting the time one spends on pursuits that mean relatively less than what one would derive through making that ultimate connection and communication with God, One’s Creator, A Higher Power, or an Essence Greater than oneself.

As stated in Taoism, Verse 47, “Without going out of my door, I can know all things, without looking out my window, I can know the ways of Heaven.”
