A prop is defined as "any movable article or objects used on the set of a play or movie." Well, the process of stopping smoking can be seen as a play or movie. The opening credits or "curtain up" are the reasons you have written down for stopping smoking. The scene setting is the planning and the end credits or "curtain down" is the time you tell everyone how successful you have been and that you are no longer a smoker. The main meat of a movie or play is the centerpiece - the time after the scene has been set and when most of the action takes place. This is akin to the time that you have really got into the no smoking regimen. And, just like a good play or movie, you will benefit from props.Props, in smoking terms, can distract you from the cravings you may be feeling when withdrawing. A glass of water by your side is always handy especially if you are getting cravings. Have some sweets beside you to suck and taste. What about some nicotine chewing gum or just plain bubble gum? Manipulating things in your mouth can stave of the physical cravings associated with smoking withdrawal.Use your hands. Have something handy - perhaps a crossword to complete, a model to make or some other dextrous task to perform. You will forget that you are not holding a cigarette. Have a small bowl of fruit handy or perhaps some sticks of carrot or celery. Munch away! Breadsticks, too, are a great help and distraction.Have music and TV nearby - use them. Distract yourself as much as you can. The cravings can be fought and they will get easier as time passes. The best "prop" is to have a friend or relative nearby who you can talk to when you are finding it difficult to cope. Remember, even horror movies end and when yours does you will be smoke free.
