Writers write whether they get paid or not. After the grumbling, the indifference and mediocre results, I did a smart and financially lucrative thing. I signed up for two writing classes. By investing a small amount of money, effort and time, my writing profits increased a great deal. Both were online classes instructed by the same teacher. She put my skepticism about online writing to rest the first day. The Instructor introduced herself and laid out a plan for the six weeks. She filled each week with activities where we conversed with her and other students about our writing ideas. She gave creative comprehensive assignments in which she encouraged us to grow, develop and ask questions pertaining to our individual styles, interests and careers. $75.00 for six weeks turned into a good investment including a great list of online addresses of magazines, newspapers and books. After the classes ended, I did research into other online writing classes and found hundreds of opportunities. A few caught my eye such as: http://www.WritingClasses.com (Gotham Writers), OWL Handouts— http://owl.English.purdue.edu/handouts/index2.html , http://www.magazinewriting.com , and Margie Davis’s Online Writing Courses— http://members.aol.com/Mdavis1493/writing.htm.The OWL is an online Writing Lab at Purdue University that I encountered as a master’s student at Capella University. OWL has many downloadable handouts and is particularly helpful to the individual rusty in sentence structure or needing a brush-up with the written word, plus it addresses general writing concerns such as resumes, business reports and other professional writing needs.WritingClasses.com, (Gotham Writers Workshop), holds contests for free online workshops and publication prizes. The teachers are professional, and the classes are small and diverse including children’s, mystery, non-fiction, fiction, and screenplay.Magazinewriting.com has several basic writing courses, writing links, information about freelancing, and jobs for writers with an average cost of $75.00 per course. However, they mention little about the quality and experience of the instructors.Margie Davis’s Online Writing Courses, a writing class focusing on health issues, is also interesting. It slants toward health writers, particularly regarding cancer and other family health issues. She is a published author and a teacher since 1993. Some of her classes include: Personal Essays, Writing About Cancer, and Writing For Families. The costs for her sessions range from $30-60.Don’t sign up for a writing class unless you’re serious. Many students in some online classes treated the courses like an online chat. Approach your writing class with a positive attitude and a zest to learn to impact your writing! As with most education, you get out of it what you put into it. Writing classes online require your attention, promptness, and dedication not unlike the standard classroom education – only you get to learn in your slippers!--- Copyright 2006 Toni Star
