Take Care Of Your Skin

By: Eric Hartwell

Your skin is constantly under attack. From the elements, from the body, from the foods you consume and the sun’s harmful rays.

Keeping your skin clean and clear is a process that thousands of beauty care products and pharmaceutical companies invest billions of dollars a year to chase the fountain of youth. With a little bit of knowledge and common sense, there are many things we are in control of that can help us develop a simple and beneficial beauty routine to keep the skin healthy. Although skin care products are marketed primarily to women, there is no gender or age discrimination in the race against time and the eventual destruction of the skin.

Everyone knows drinking 8 glasses of water a day will help regulate your weight. It will help your skin too! The hydration of the body is important for the skin to keep its elasticity and shape. Consuming caffeine and alcohol will make you dehydrated. An adult should drink one gallon of water per day, adding 3 additional glasses for each caffeinated or alcoholic drink to maintain hydration. This is the single most important thing you can do to ensure proper skin maintenance.

Eat Your Vegetables. Yes, it is true. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables in addition to a healthy, balanced diet of fats and proteins will do for your skin what it does for your body—keep it looking good. Vegetables, especially raw vegetables, contain powerful antioxidants which protect the skin against exposure to free radicals in the harsh environment we live in. There isn’t any protein in a bag of potato chips and diets in fatty or junk-foods can lead to pimples and clogged pores, making the skin’s job of protecting the body more difficult. Proteins fight off pimples and strengthen the skin.

Smoking can cause irreversible damage to the skin. After 10 years of smoking, wrinkles on or around the mouth will begin to form and are irreversible. The chemical reaction of a cigarette in the body forces the blood vessels in the dermis to narrow, reducing the flow of oxygen and necessary nutrients the skin needs to remain healthy. Vitamin A can be deficient in the skin of a smoker. Collagen and elastin protein cells, also in the dermis, are inhibited and the skin begins to wrinkle and loose elasticity prematurely. Additional wrinkling of the skin will occur from the heat of a cigarette or cigar and the muscle memory the face develops through the physical process of smoking, adding fine or deep lines around the eyes and mouth.

Cleaning the face and body with a mild soap is mandatory for maintaining a youthful glow. A skin care regiment of cleansing with environmentally friendly products followed by moisturizing the skin with non-comedogenic and additive-free lotions will help protect your skin from absorbing harmful toxins. Wearing SPF 15 or higher sunscreen daily on the face and on the body when exposed to the sun will lessen the health risk of skin cancer.
