Team Building – Work and Fun

By: Jason Montag

Often times in sports and business a handful of individuals are thrown together in a room and given a task and are expected to achieve success. Tasks can be completed by groups that are not truly teams however the results will not be close to what they can be. In business the effectiveness of a team translates to dollars and in sports the effectiveness translates to points on the board. The more efficiently the team works together the better the outcome. When trying to build a team there is a number of techniques that can be employed. One of my favorite ways to get things rolling is by playing games. These games are a lot of fun for all involved but they all have a purpose and a benefit for the individuals participating.

There is one game in particular that is a heck of a lot of fun. The game is very simple in its explanation but can be very difficult for teams to accomplish initially. A collection of objects are strewn about the room. The cool thing is that the game can be done on the football field, in the office building or basically anywhere else. The great thing is that the different environments just add to the challenge. One team member will direct a blindfolded person around the area to locate all of the objects. The more the team practices and works together the faster and faster the objects will be able to be found. This game can be done by people that have never met one another and are a great introduction ice breaker.

Another game that can be played to assist teams in working together and brainstorming together is the egg drop game. Most of you have seen this game done as a science fair project but it works like a charm. It is actually amazing how well some teams can work together to develop a new and interesting product. The game is to make a container that when dropped from a height with an egg inside it will prevent the egg from cracking. The major catch is that prior to testing the egg drop containers you have the team give a sales pitch of why you should put your money (in theory) behind. If you have multiple teams then there can be a reward for the winning team.

The key to building teams is to cater the activities to the particular group that it is going to be used by. There is a benefit to many of the activities whether or not they are task of job specific to those people in the activities however there is also a time to incorporate tasks and building games that incorporate the jobs and tasks that the team is involved in regularly. If you have an office team that spends their time dealing with numbers all day, tug of war is alright to do for fun but the physical activities are not the only ones that should be done. The more you work at it the more efficiently your teams will work together and the more successful they will be.
