Terrorists to Behead Soldier

Police in the UK recently foiled an attempt to kidnap and behead a British Muslim Soldier. Links point towards Osama Bin Laden.

This is simply another brutal blow for democracy in the western world. Now Muslim soldiers in Britain are fearful of such moves and attempts to destabilise their communities. Families of the soldiers are naturally concerned.

It means that we are constantly keeping a watchful eye on virtually everything we do - security and safety has become the norm.

The tragic thing is, as if the kidnap and beheading wasn't tragic enough, that the whole process was ready to be shown on the internet.

The attempt follows an appeal by the Muslim cleric Omar Bakri Mohammed last year to kidnap a British soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan. he sees all Muslim British soldiers as non-believers. The view is that Muslim soldiers that kill fellow Muslims are traitors.

The ultimate aim, apart from obvious publicity, was to scare Muslims from joining the British Army. A number of men, British but of Pakistani origin, were arrested and detained.

Of course, none of this is new. Beheadings have been practiced for many years and certainly in Iraq before the last Gulf War. Ken Bigley was beheaded in the most undignified of ways and this was aired for all to see.

But to strike, or attempt to strike, in British communities is something that is even more sordid and depraved than we could ever really imagine. It is a move which, if successful, would have caused unprecedented revulsion and terror throughout the world.
