Texas Hold 'em Poker: The Very Least You Need to Know

In "head-to-head" or "heads up" rounds, when only two players are left in the hand, blinds are posted differently: the dealer places the "small blind" and the opponent posts the "big blind."

There are three most common forms of Texas Hold ‘em: limit hold ‘em, no-limit hold ‘em, and pot-limit hold ‘em, the most popular being limit hold ‘em, the form found played in live action casino games in the U.S. In limit hold ‘em, during the first two rounds of each hand (the pre-flop and the flop, which includes the first three community cards), bets and raises must be equal to "the big blind," called the "small bet." Bets and raises must equal twice the "big blind," called the "big bet" in the third and forth rounds (the turn and river, the forth and fifth community cards).

The form most commonly seen in tournament poker on television and in the main event of the World Series of Poker is no-limit hold ‘em. In this game, bets and raises may be any amount over the minimum raise up to a player’s total amount of chips on the table. This bet is call the "all-in bet." In pot-limit hold ‘em, the maximum raise is equal to the current amount in the pot.
