The Dangers of Secondhand Smoking

Secondhand smoking is also known as passive smoking because the person who is inhaling the smoke does not want or he is not even necessarily aware that he is inhaling second hand smoke. secondhand smoking is also poisonous for the body because the chemicals found the smoke contains carcinogens that can cause different complications including cancer. It is believed that there are around four thousand different compounds found in secondhand smoke and around two hundred of those compounds are harmful to the body.

When a cigarette is lighted and smoked by a person, only around half of the smoke is actually inhaled; this means that the other half floats around in the air and this is known as secondhand smoke. There are a lot of risks involved when you inhale cigarette smoke. secondhand smoking poses more dangers to your body than you realize. This is especially true when a child inhales secondhand smoke because his lungs and other organs has not yet reached the level of immunity compared to an adult.

Secondhand smoking is associated in the development of several kinds of cancers including lung cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, nasal sinus cavity cancer, and bladder cancer. You should also note that secondhand smoking is especially dangerous since some compounds found in cigarettes become carcinogenic if it comes into contact with certain body enzymes so be sure to stay as far away as possible from someone who is smoking especially if you are with a child.

Children who are below eighteen months of age are particularly in danger of many other complications brought about by secondhand smoking. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that around one hundred fifty thousand to three hundred thousand children develop infections that can be detrimental to their health in the long run. Another common disease that is believed to be caused by secondhand smoking is asthma; secondhand smoking can severely worsen this condition in children and healthy children can likewise develop this condition if they are exposed to secondhand smoke regularly.

On the other hand, even common sickness such as cough and wheezing can be traced to secondhand smoking. And note that children who are exposed to too much cigarette smoke can also develop emotional problems such as irritability and anxiety. Also, these children are more likely to suffer from dental problems like cavities and they may encounter eye and nose problems in the future. The ears of a child is also not safe from the risks attributed to secondhand smoking because it is believed that up to one million and six hundred thousand children suffer from ear infections because of their exposure to secondhand smoke.

There are more serious problems that can be attributed to secondhand smoking like coronary heart disease, artherosclerosis and even death. second hand smoke is definitely has worse dangers than anybody expected in the past. But with all the information available right now, there is no longer any excuse to tolerate secondhand smoke.
