Even before her third month of pregnancy was over, my wife was after me to go shopping for a baby bed. Of course, my male brains couldn’t grasp what the rush was all about. I was left grappling with her argument of not waiting till the last minute for all the shopping though it was hardly last minute to me. After all there were still six months left and the bed would just lie unused for the same period. But before the familiar ‘lethargic’ accusations, I just caved in.It was the first time I was hearing of a baby bed, seeing one had hardly been my fortune, till now. If truth be told, I had always shared a bed with my elder brother as a young child. That is, till I was old enough to throw him off the bed in my sleep. Of course, I got a bed of my own then. That was reason enough for me to be zapped when we visited a store and I found out that a tiny baby bed cost more than what we had paid for the king- size bed at home.Slowly when I came to, I was left marveling at the incredible range of baby beds available. Not only were there the familiar cradles and cribs, but also an assortment of basket like beds called ‘Bassinets’. There were rocking beds, glider, portable, bunk, toddler beds, and even traditional heirloom Moses baskets! One could even have the baby bedding sets custom designed by specialists or consultants. Although all this might burn a hole in your pocket, but like my wife says there is no price for making your new born feel like royalty. Of course, I agreed with my dear wife. Then, we went on to discover that baby beds do not just come in wood but all sorts of materials. We could have our choice from not only wood, but also metal, disposable plastic and even materials having medicinal and therapeutic properties. These beds often come attached with wheels, casters, rocking accessories and in one case, a not so preferable battery operated fan. After hours of looking around and giving the once-over to wooden, metal, plastic and porcelain baby beds, my better-half finally decided on a hardwood ‘Caspian’ bed. This came fitted with caster wheels, three point mattress supports, and a unique release device for raising-lowering sides. Of course, there’s nothing like the warm loving embrace of your own mother to remember when you grow up. But for the other bits, I would like to gift my unborn child something better to reminisce of than rolling around on a cold, rigid floor- I would like to present to my child its own special space.
