There's a new player on the internet video/social networking scene - Free IQ. If successful, it threatens to revolutionize the way people search for, as well as produce, online content. The emphasis of Free IQ is on material that provides knowledge or information, all put into the context of a search engine that's also a social network! There is already a large and growing database of videos on many topics. Unlike the more random content of YouTube, FreeIQ was designed to be a place to share knowledge. This, of course, can take a multitude of forms. Right now a lot of the content pertains to marketing, especially internet marketing, which reflects the people who started and first joined FreeIQ. However, the field is wide open for people to share their expertise about almost anything. When members post content to Free IQ, it is ranked by other members. This way, the content that people find most valuable rises to the top of the search engine. Whereas normal search engines are usually controlled by shrewd marketing tactics, the rankings at Free IQ are meant to reflect the value to users. Visually, the home page at Free IQ appears to be a typical search engine. The logistics of the system, however, are designed to bring up more focused and valuable content than a typical search. Every member also has a bio page and a place to start a mailing list, making Free IQ a social network as well as an informational site. The Free IQ site also includes a 2-tiered affiliate program, meaning that affiliates earn commissions on purchases from people they sign up, as well as people *their affiliates* sign up. Free IQ is a commercial endeavor, so most of the content is designed to ultimately produce sales or customers. However, this does not mean that the postings are mere ads; on the contrary, there is quite a bit of substantial content posted there, giving users a real taste of the product and not a mere morsel. As a new endeavor, the future of FreeIQ is uncertain. It's something of an experiment that either will or won't take off. As I can see the potential for a vast and diverse site full of interesting content, I'm hoping more people will join the experiment and move it in all kinds of unpredictable directions.
