The Genuine Article

By: Jeffrey Hauser

You must have a lot of free time on your hands, otherwise you would be doing something constructive rather than reading this. But, then again, perhaps there was a lull on television with no football games on or you were simply bored and surfing the net for anything interesting. Either way, I am very grateful you stopped to read this article. I hope to make it worth your while.

First, a few words about me. I grew up on the Jersey shore, moved to Scottsdale, AZ thirty years ago, worked in advertising all my life and now run a health information website with my wife out of our home. I have written over 50 articles about the Yellow Pages, where I worked for 25 years. I also started a website for Renaissance people that are multi-talented called, polideopitic.com, meaning those that have many ideas. I travel a lot and write about cruising and my destinations. I also have a dry sense of humor and write about my dog, my daughter, society’s ills and just about everything in between. Nothing is off-limits. I won’t reach Lance W.’s astounding number of articles on ezine, but I’m shooting for a reasonable number of interesting and informative ones that gets one to think.

So this should be no exception. That’s the hallmark of a good article. It conveys knowledge and asks the reader to give thought to a concept. For instance, if you have devoted a minute or two up until now, I need to give you something of value that you can take away and ponder. Something pithy and relevant that will cause your head to spin. Did you know that:

  • 100 years ago, the average lifespan was only 47 years
  • There are 11 points on the collar around Kermit the Frog's neck.
  • Time magazine's "Man of the Year" for 1938 was Adolf Hitler.
  • If the heads on Mt. Rushmore had bodies, they would be 500 feet tall.
  • A fetus acquires fingerprints at the age of three months.
  • By age sixty, most people have lost half of their taste buds.
  • The first-known contraceptive was crocodile dung, used by Egyptians in 2000 BC.
  • Sherlock Holmes never said 'Elementary, my dear Watson.'
  • Americans spend approximately $25 billion each year on beer.
  • An ounce of gold can be stretched into a wire 50 miles long.
  • Money isn't made out of paper, it's made out of linen.
  • About one-tenth of the earth's surface is permanently covered with ice.
  • Hawaii is the only US state that grows coffee.
  • The longest name in the Bible Mahershalalbaz (Isaiah 8:1).
  • A rat can last longer without water than a camel can.

So, isn’t that terrific stuff? Didn’t you learn some good trivia to use at the next get together with the boys or gals? Okay, I gave it my best shot. I promise to come up with even better facts in my next article, soon to be titled, “The Really Cool Genuine Article Consisting of Things You Never Thought of Before, But Are Glad You Learned Them Here.”
