For many, fear is the single motivator in all aspects of life. Though not always consciously aware of the reasons, fear drives decision making and seems to control thoughts. Fear dictates our own individual realities to the extent that we recreate the same realities over and over again. Why do some people use drugs? Why do some people run from love? Why do some people tell chronic lies? Why are people afraid? One story that comes to mind is the story about a young girl in love. She had fear of rejection from her family. She also manipulated the situation and manifested it into one in which her true love became the one blamed for all the misfortunes. For this one particular girl, it was easier to live with a dysfunctional and controlling family without love than it was to give herself completely and be happy. Fear? Yes. This was driven out of fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of feeling new emotions, and fear of being true to herself. Fear breeds liars. Lies mask the true wants, desires, and possibilities of a person. For some, as was the case with the young girl, the fear of the unknown was so great that lies were the only answer. Instead of being happy but walking the unknown path, lies were generated to convince herself that she really wanted to be trapped in dysfunction with no true deep and strong emotions that may cause pain at some point. Suppressed emotions to avoid feeling strong pain or love. Ultimately there are two types of people. One that does the simple daily rituals and does not question. These people usually have a reason why they cannot do something. Excuses for not achieving are often times generated out of fear of actually obtaining the goals that were set. Long lasting love, academic success, even deep personal understandings of the self are all cut short from this fear driven behavior. The other people, however, enjoy the unknown. The new emotions that can be felt, the new goals that can be achieved, the potential and possibilities become endless and even desired. Are they fearless? Is anyone really capable of truth and honesty? Considering the thought that we ultimately control our reality and perception of the world, anything is possible. With thought, understanding, and personal and spiritual growth, fear is an unknown as all becomes welcomed. We create what we need and welcoming that thought erases fears. Lies, manipulation, and control somehow are not important or necessary. Brendan Giusti is an author and musician currently residing in New York.
