The Groom - Tips

By: Eric Hartwell

The bridegroom is the male person that's soon to be married or was recently married. Bridegroom is often abridged to the word, groom. The groom is accompanied by his best man, the groomsmen, and ushers, and his partner is the bride. After the ceremony is finished, he will be a husband an longer a groom.

The groom is the star of the show (after the bride), and, as such, will be expected to give the most inclusive and eloquent of speeches. He'll need to mention the following people and groups during his speeches: the bride's father, the guests, the gift-bearers, the wife, the wedding planners and organizers and even the bridesmaids. He will be typically expected to talk quite a bit about how he met his wife, what they share in common, and their prospects of future peace and joy. He'll need to thank people for attending, for their efforts, and for their love, i.e., in the case of the father to his daughter (the groom's bride).

The following are pitfalls to avoid when giving a speech as the groom:

  • Don't let the speech be denigrated with a list of so-so thank-yous. Spice it up with humorous jokes and anecdotes.
  • Don't mention money as much as the generic generosity.
  • Do use transitions in between sentences and themes so that the speech flows and doesn't seem chunky or broken up.

Furthermore, the groom should pay just as much attention to the wedding details as the bride. A common misconception is that it's only important to the bride; however, 90% of those attending will remember the day vividly and with warm memories. This is a chance to showcase your inner talents - of design, planning, social conscientiousness, and verve - to all those important to you and your bride.
