The Modern Garage Heater

By: Michelle Bery

In today’s homes, where the maximizing of space is of the utmost importance, the garage is no longer a place relegated for forgotten storage. The modern garage has a number of roles – everything from workshop to car maintenance. But temperature control – expected and taken for granted in our homes – has rarely kept pace in this additional space. And the result is often an uncomfortable place that is vulnerable to all weather conditions; certainly not conducive to an effective work environment. Luckily, with an efficient and safe garage heater, you can utilize this space year round and comfortably complete any projects at hand.

Finding a garage heater that works for your needs depends largely on the size of your work area and frequency of use. If you have a smaller garage space, or you use the garage as a work space only infrequently, then a small electric space heater may be enough to suit your needs. The smaller electric units used as a garage heater are compact, efficient, and use a minimum of electricity to achieve a maximum of comfort.

Larger garage spaces, or a garage that is used frequently as a work space, may warrant a larger, more comprehensive garage heater. These units are powered by natural or propane gas and come in the form of standing units or overhead systems that distribute warm air to the entire space. While a gas garage heater is more efficient for larger areas, they must be properly vented. Because this garage heater uses gas, there are fumes that must be vented to the outside. Further, it is wise to have a gas garage heater professionally installed to ensure optimum safety.

For a garage that is used as an extension to one’s home – as a separate and utilized room – a more permanent garage heater that is controlled by a thermostat, is the most effective option. A thermostat will allow you to maintain a consistent temperature so that the garage is ready to be used at any time – regardless of the weather.

Another option, in terms of a garage heater, is to extend your heating duct work into the garage itself, thus connecting it to the internal temperature of your home. For those who use their garage as another room in their home, this is the most cost-effective and efficient option.

A modern and efficient garage heater can add instant space to your home, allowing you to use your garage as you would any other room in your house. With proper temperature control , you can enjoy your garage no matter what the temperature outside your front door.
