The World Urban Slum Crisis and Committees

By: Lance Winslow

One look at the Slum Crisis in Nairobi and one can see that this is a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions. Why is everything taking so long to fix? Well the city does not want the slums there calling them; "Illegal Settlements" and the non-profit organizations have taken this as a philosophical project to debate and have committee meetings around the world to "discuss" it. It is time to stop the committees, often held in places like Cancun, Mexico resorts and other vacation places around the World.

It is time to forget the student semester projects, no more half trivial meetings or superficial games. It is time to go in hardcore and attack that problem to WIN. The problem is that everyone is weak, PC and afraid to get it done, it takes strength not bleeding hearts to build [personal opinion]. It takes greatness, leadership and sacrifice to accomplish such large challenges, not committees? When has a Committee, ever solved any huge problem like this in World; name ONE time? Name it? Although this is my opinion, I have yet to find anything that proves that sitting in a committee putting into minutes, what a real problem solver could have figured out in seconds provides a better solution.

Generally such committee's end result is substandard and a giant compromise leading to other problems and unintended consequences. There are real needs in the Nairobi Slums like water, wastewater treatment and power. The Kibera slum in Nairobi sits on a river and it has every thing needed, no problem, it just takes money and someone to pull the trigger, these things can be done literally in a few weeks. Water filtration on the way in, sewer treatment on the way out.

The US Navy Seabees build airfields and bases in weeks? The issue to completing this task is only political will. Housing for orphans of HIV/AIDS victims and slum dwellers can be quite easy to build. The orphan housing can be included on the edge of the Kibera Slum, close to aid workers who come from the city, easy to get to. I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.
