The Yin Yang Made Really Easy

By: fongsuimy

Understanding the Yin and yang is the key to learning Chinese Metaphysics. This is in addition to the knowing the Five Elements and the Ba Gua.
Old time Chinese believe that at the dawn of times there was a state of nothingness or void. They named it Wu Ji and selected the circle to represent it.
Two opposite but supplemental elemental energies - namely yin and yang - come out of this nothingness. The stronger one is designated yang while the passive one is designated yin. Both of them - equally important in standing - interact continually with each other.
The round Tai Qi symbol suggests that the interaction between Yin and Yang is perennial. Yin and Yang is next shown as two tadpole like shape to show that when Yang grows, Yin contracts and when Yin grows, Yang contracts. Next the black spot within the head of the black tadpole shape infer that Yin starts to appear when Yang is at its strongest.
Furthermore, the equal portions of the Yin and Yang slices suggest that both are equal and important and neither is more important that the other.
Everything can be labeled as either Yin or Yang. Active traits such as day, summer, sun, motion, white, angular and shinny are considered Yang. Passive traits such as night, winter, moon, stillness, black, smooth and dull are considered Yin.
In addition to the above, the concept of the Yin and Yang can be applied to seasons, plants, objects, human beings, the Five Elements etc.
Yin Yang can be applied to seasons. Winter is Yin while Summer is Yang. Spring become growing Yang while Autumn is growing Yin.
The concept of Yin and Yang can be applied to objects. Yin objects are those that are small, rounded, dull in appearance or cold to the touch. On the other hand, Yang objects are those that are large, angular in shape, shinny or warm to the touch.
Plants can also be categorized into Yin and Yang. A live plant is labeled Yang while dead wood such as furniture is Yin. A large tall tree is Yang while a small one is Yin. Finally whose with rounded leaves are Yin while those with narrow leaves are Yin.
In human beings, the left brain which influence logic is Yang while the right brain which guide creativity is Yin. Yang people tend to display boastful, loud, aggressive and impulsive characteristics while Yin people tend to be shy, quiet, soft-spoken and patient.
Both the external parts of the body and the internal organs can be classified into Yin and Yang. The front and lower part of the body - below the waistline - is Yin while the back and upper part of the body is Yang. The small and large intestine, the stomach, the bladder and gall bladder are Yin.
What about spaces in the house? The bedroom, study and storeroom are categorized as Yin. The living, kitchen, family and dining area are classified as Yang. As a rule those spaces that need less noise and lighting or for resting is Yin and vice-versa.
What about the Yin and Yang of the Five Elements? The Five Elements can also be classified into Yin and Yang. For example swift flowing water is Yang while still water is Yin.
River - Yin or Yang? If you go back to basis principles water is Yang (moving) while mountain is Yin (still). However in some parts of the river, water flows slowly e.g. pond or meandering courses and is considered Yin. In some other parts water flows quickly e.g. straight steep courses and it considered Yang.
