Taking your child to the emergency room can be a scary and stressful thing for both you and them. There are a number of things that you can do to help make your trip to the emergency less scary for your child and to help the experience go as smoothly as possible as well. The first thing that you need to keep in mind is that the emergency room will take the most severe or emergency cases first. Please be patient as you would appreciate this if you were in the shoes of the person having the most severe emergency or trauma situation. If you have time, gather a few activities for your child to distract them and keep them occupied. Good things to bring include books, activity books or crayons and paper. I realize that in some emergency situations, there is no time. However, if you could at least grab your child’s favorite toy, stuffed animal or blanket, the familiarity of this loved object will help bring them comfort. The emergency room will want to have information about a variety of things so that they can give your child the best medical care. If you know your child is allergic to medicine or a certain type of food or if they are taking a particular medication, let the doctor or nurse know as this little bit of information could significantly impact the course of treatment. They will also want information about what happened, how it happened, when it happened and other similar bits of information. If there is a timeline involved, such as the pain started this morning at 8:00 am and by 1:00 pm it became unbearable, be prepared to relay this to the hospital. Make sure you have your insurance card and information with you as well as your identification.Keeping in mind that emergency rooms can be busy, be prepared to wait and don’t give up and leave. If you are having a true emergency, it would be best to have the situation turn worse when you are at the hospital than when you are in your car or back at your house. In the end, making sure that your child is getting the care he or she needs is worth the wait, no matter how long it may be. Hopefully these tips will help your visit to the emergency room be less stressful and scary for both you and your child.
