Trade’s Networking

By: Jan Smith

Have you ever thought about what Trades work around you? Who goes in and does their part of the project / job before you, who before them etc? And what about the Trades that follow you and who follow them? How often do you consider them and leave your part of the job as well as you can to suit their work requirements?

Fascinating, isn’t it, when you sit and ponder the Domino affect you could all have on each other and each project.

That is why if you want to know who a good tradesperson is, just ask a ‘tradie’ who follows them – believe me, they’ll tell you pretty quick! How do I know? Because that is how I used to recruit my trade Businesses into the H.O.M.E. group. People recommend good ones willingly, but they ‘bad mouth’ a lazy, inconsiderate one even faster. And when this happens within the industry itself, you can imagine how detrimental this can be to another trade business.

Imagine you are a project manager managing a big construction job. If you were that project manager, would you award a contract to someone who had a reputation for holding other trades up in their section because a job was not finished off properly?

No way!

Why would you take the chance by ‘importing’ a problem before the project even started?

So my message here to all construction contractors is to be considerate of the other trades working on the same project. Finish off your section of a job properly so that you never hold another trade up.

That’s the best way of being invited to tender for many, many projects – a good reputation for a job finished well, on time and on budget.

Apart from the invitation to tender on big projects, just think of all the smaller jobs all those other trade businesses working around you get, that they often need your trade to do a section of in just their ‘normal’ building jobs. By earning a good reputation in one area it carries over into all sorts of opportunities that never come your way if you have a bad reputation.

My message here is to build your business up on a foundation of responsible work practices and a healthy respect for all the other trades working on the same job site.
