Trends are fun to study, but how do you get one going you might ask? Well, to start a trend you must overcome a 7% of any group population's will. In other words you need 7% of the group to believe in a new trend and subscribe to it. One of the ways this is done is to run a flag up the flagpole and start saluting it.Eventually other people will see this and want to know what it's all about and if the other humans are convincing in their voice and their passion for such a trend then other humans might follow that. Eventually more and more people subscribe to the idea or concept and also talk very highly about it with passion in their voice thus attracting even more people and this is how trends are started.Once a trend is set into motion and gets over the 7% required and breaks the attrition rate of those dropping out of the trend then it will build itself. Of course getting to that point is not easy and there are many ways to advance a trend or to kick it into motion. But to really make it go the best marketing, advertising, public relations and publicity may not be enough. It needs word-of-mouth advertisers and followers. The only way to get such people is to offer them a solution to a problem that they either fear or problem that needs to be solved and making them believe that this particular trend will solve that problem. No, I did not say starting a trend was going to be easy and I must say having started some trends in various industries and groups I can tell you that it is not easy. But if you can talk with passion and a convincing voice you will find others willing to listen and if you make a strong case for your trend they will follow. I sincerely hope you will consider all this in 2006.
