Two Vital Traits If You want To Be Really Happy

By: Tim Connor

Be don't act.

Actors and actresses play roles. Parents, spouses, children, friends, and siblings play roles in life. There is, however, one major difference in the roles that each of us ply. The actors and actresses get paid for their roles. The rest of us do not earn our living from the roles we play.

There are some common denominators, however. Actors work with scripts, so do parents and spouses. Actors rehearse, and so do children. Actors improvise when the timing is right, so do siblings.

The major problem with acting our way through life is that we have to remember which role and script we have used with each of the people in our lives. This can take energy, time, and can cause stress and frustration.

Being in life, is just that. Being implies you are who you are and you don't need to act. Being is less stressful and more rewarding in the long run, than acting. If this is true, why do so many people act their way through life?

There are a number of reasons for this, but generally, they are because we are all looking for some degree of acceptance, validation, approval or love. We behave in such a way that we believe will give these to us. People who are happy are real, authentic, and vulnerable. They are not afraid of going through life without putting on their masks or costumes. They are consistent in their beliefs, values, behavior and attitudes, no matter who they are with or what they are doing. This makes life so much easier. They don't have to have instant recall on what to say, how to feel or who to be. They just are.

Share yourself with others.

Each of us takes up space in this world. We use the Earth's resources of water, food, and air. We will all be here a short time, when you consider the age of Spaceship Earth. We owe it to each other as fellow passengers, to use these resources, which are available to us, with prudence and wisdom. We also owe our fellow passengers the benefit of what we know and learn while on our journey.

Generosity of spirit, knowledge, and the fruits of our labor are just three of the things we can share with our other passengers.

There are two types of people in the world, those that believe in scarcity and those that believe in abundance, those that squirrel away their riches, of both ideas and capital, and those that share willingly with those in need and those that will benefit through their sharing. One quick test of where you stand is how you treat homeless people who are asking for a small contribution to their existence. Do you avoid eye contact, feel negative toward them, and offer no assistance, or do you share a meager portion of what you spend in a year on going out to fine restaurants for expensive meals?

There is generosity of spirit and selfishness of spirit. Happy people have generous, sharing dispositions and help where they can, with what they can. I am not suggesting that you go on a crusade, here. I am only asking you to look deep in your heart for how you generally feel toward people who are less fortunate than you, and can't even afford to invest in a book like this that might help them change their circumstances.
