Types Of Boot Camps

By: Eddie Tobey

Even legal punishments lose all appearance of justice when too strictly inflicted on men compelled by the last extremity of distress to incur them

When people sin, even God gives them an opportunity to redeem themselves. With boot camps, the legal system is trying to do much the same. Boot camps are designed to overcome delinquent behavior through strict discipline.

The term boot camp refers to any sort of facility that restricts people and tends to change their personalities with intense discipline and grueling physical tasks. In this form, the military has been using boot camps to train recruits since the earliest of times. Military boot camps are not meant to punish individuals, but succeed in making them entirely submissive to authority. In the 1980's, Georgia and Oklahoma became the first to open boot camps for prisoners in United States. This was done mainly to reduce the populations of the largely overcrowded prisons and as a preventive measure for those likely to commit crime again. Initially, most boot camps were government-run, but now quite a few are private institutions. There are different types of boot camps, which use different techniques to reform individuals, although the basic principle of hard work and discipline remain the same.

Most boot camps are made for teenagers that act out and for juvenile delinquents. They can be categorized based on facilities they provide and duration of the stay. In general, boot camps for different sexes are separate or are located a distance from each other. There are long-term boot camps such as the military training schools, as well as short-term places for summer reform programs. Many are meant strictly for criminals and people are sent there only after a court sentences them there. These places are highly secure facilities and often make use of violent methods to control the crowds. Others are meant for troubled teens and are like schools boarding schools where the teens are counseled and trained. Such facilities provide educational and career-building opportunities to their young inmates, along with recreational activities and sports. Boot camps can also be divided as per the kind of people they treat. Some are made for sex-offenders whereas some treat drug-abusers.
