Use Your Whole Brain and Create the Life You Want to Live

By: Chance Massaro

Is there a trick to breaking old useless or destructive habits? Absolutely! Affirmations can help. Having a buddy or mentor or coach can help. You can also awaken your whole brain to learn, remember and perform like the champion you are. All you need to do is discover how your brain works…then use it consciously. One way to learn how your brain works is to understand how it is linked to your senses.

First, think back to a time you learned something very easily and felt good doing it. Recreate in your mind the ways in which you used your senses. When you were learning, did you draw or imagine interesting pictures? Was it a well-spoken lecture or mnemonic? Perhaps you just kept at it – and learned by doing? Those senses that work best to help you learn are the ones that will have the most effect on boosting your brain to its optimum performance.

To break those habits, you will first want to motivate yourself toward a new habit and away from the old one. Whatever senses you used successfully back then, you will want to use them again as you think about the life you want to live. For example, if you are a visual learner, you will want to use visuals to motivate yourself. If listening works best for your learning, you will want to hear (again and again) the information and motivation that will propel you away from the old and toward the new.

Now, focus your motivation toward creating new habits. Contemplate a sense of how miserable you will be if you don’t create those healthy habits. Then contemplate how happy you will be when you do create them. If visuals work for you, than create clear compelling pictures. If sound works for you, speak your future into a tape recorder (or ask someone to tell you about your positive and negative futures. Refer to them twice a day.

Using your “best” sense is just one way that you can help your mind help you. Other methods include using your best intelligences, cognitive styles and many more motivational techniques. You’ve discovered the toolbox; now use those tools!
