Water Heater Principles

By: John Philips

Water heaters are designed to meet the hot water demands of your household and the heating of water is considered the second largest cost of energy next to heat/air conditioning systems in your home. Whether your home uses electricity, gas, or liquid propane gas there is a water heaters designed to suit. Gas, oil or electric-fired devices are all available for residential or commercial use, but for larger flow rates gas heaters tend to be more common.

The temperature of water is raised by heat energy that is infused into it by the water heater. The principle of operation of the water heater is simply that of heat transfer from a source to a sink, where the water acts as the sink, and the gas is the source of energy.

In this modern day of advanced and advancing technology, ways have been devised to draw energy from natural gas to power water heaters. Other designs of the water heater make use of organic materials like propane or electricity. Due to the abundance of the resource, natural gas beats out the likes of electricity and propane at cost price with respect to the output of heated water.

Gas is burned and releases heat that passes through the burner under the tank of the water heater and eventually warms the water. The wall holds a valve that opens and shuts to control the flow of gas into the water heater. Devising a means by which the temperature in a heater is controlled by the aid of a thermostat was a good idea of the manufacturers.

The whole of the heating depends on a pilot light that brings the system alive. A good example of this process can be found by closely watching a gas grill. The combusted gas fumes find their way out of the heater through a venting system. The roof of the heater is fitted with a PVC pipe that completes the venting system.

The heater is now improved to such a point that a fan that forces fumes out through the wall supports its venting system. Gas is not the only non solid component that works with a gas water heater; water does too. Appliances receive water from the cylinder shaped tank through the pipe network and water valve system attached to the water heater after the water has been heated.

Another type of the water heater however does not have a tank. Dishwashers use heated water from a tankless water heater. Operating a water heater in the absence of a tank is an interesting procedure.

Hot water supply is endless in a tankless water heater. The energy efficiency of a tankless water heater may actually surprise you. Tankless heaters start heating only when the water valve opens. Since storage is done in the tank, the absence of a tank in the tankless version also means the absence of storage. Manufacturers have only fashioned this tankless heater model for heating of water before eventual use.
