We're Hypnotized By New Years Resolutions!

By: Peter R Cutforth

Right now, its 2 days away from the beginning of 2007. It's that time of year when we hear a lot of people rattle on about "New Years resolutions", setting a few 'goals' to lose weight, get fit, and such like. Years back I used to get caught up in this nonsense… …but no more!

Anyway, I thought I'd do a little research on the subject, and I was amazed by what I found on Google Trends (google.com/trends) when I searched for "Goal Setting".

You can see a picture of what I found on my blog link below. It's really amazing! What does this show us? Are we all sheep?! Is the population conditioned to focus on goals for a week or two only over the New Year period? And, no doubt only a small percentage of the population even do that!

If you do, Congratulations! You're a good few steps ahead of most, but here's a warning: You Could Be Wasting Your Time! Now I hasten to add that you would be wrong to assume I don't believe in goal setting at all. No, I absolutely do. Just not the "New Years Resolution" type - that's all.

For sure, the end of the year is a good time to focus on setting some goals for the year ahead. You have a bit of free time, you're (hopefully) more relaxed than usual, and the year end is a good landmark to be able to usefully (but loosely) measure things.

But here's the thing:

What are you going to do with those goals DURING the year to increase your chances of them coming to pass? That's the acid test, that most of us fail, especially the "New Years Resolution brigade"!

Here's what typically happens - tell me if I'm wrong! Burst of activity for a few weeks, then… Fizzle, crash and burn!

The vast majority of people aren't significantly better off in any way at all, come February, from their feeble resolutions!

Wouldn't you agree it would make a whole lot more sense to take a different approach? Check out the Google Trends graph on my blog link below and you'll find out a way that DOES work.
