What City Design Will Future Space Colonies Have?

Have you ever consider what kind of city design a future space colonies will have? If we are going to put tens of thousands of people all living in a space colony on Mars then obviously the city will have to be designed in a much different way than the surface cities are designed for human civilizations on earth.

It makes sense that future space colonies will have much of the colony built underground instead of on the surface. The most important thing in a space colony of course will be the recycling of all material to be used over and over again and a way to make sure that there will be plenty of oxygen to breathe and water to drink.

In human civilizations on earth we have more gravity, but any human civilization on Mars or the moon will have less gravity and therefore things like running water using gravity or drainage may not work as well and it will be harder to get the human waste to the area of the reclamation facilities. These facilities are need to break apart its components and use them for other things, such as fertilizer to grow plants, which will also take the carbon dioxide and make it into oxygen, while providing food to eat.

There are many options for power and these must also be considered. Solar energy makes a lot of sense and electronic devices that use LED and other devices, which are very low wattage will be needed. Of course with new materials it may be smart to use nuclear energy, which is a clean energy and will provide nearly unlimited power for rather large size cities or human colonies on other planets or moons.

If you are interested in such things and perhaps you have worked with SimCity in the past designing civilizations on a computer; well then you might like to know that NASA is currently having a contest for those who wish to design futuristic space colonies. This might be your chance to help the future and the forward progression of the human species. Please consider all this in 2006.
