In today’s society, the word success is one the most apprised and respected word. For many, success is as important as life. If you’re successful you have a good life, if not, your life sucks. This is the way most Americans feel nowadays. If you have success, you are surrounded by a golden glow wherever you go and will feel important towards others’ eyes. Then how should you get success, but before answering than, you should ask yourself, “What exactly is success?” If you are a millionaire, are you successful?What about the car you drive? The jewelry you wear? How much stocks you own? What about your total assets? Or the money you have in the bank? Unfortunately, it is this kind of thing that you need if you want to be considered successful by your peers.But what about you? That’s right, who cares about what everybody else thinks! You see, this is what you have to consider. You should not count or measure success about what everyone else thinks! This, in my opinion, is a major problem with this world. Too much importance is given about what THEY think about us. We are too concerned about our status compared to other people. You see, take this example. Let’s suppose 4 cars, in order of importance and prestige, a Ferrari, a Mercedes, a Lexus, and a Honda. In a research and this is proved by statistics, the subconscious mind would prefer having a Lexus and living surrounded in a city with Hondas, than having a Mercedes and living surrounded by Ferraris. Can you imagine this! Considering a Mercedes being better than a Lexus, people would still prefer having a Lexus compared to a Mercedes, just to be able to be more “regarded” in their entourage. They are sacrificing money and luxury to “look good”.This example shows pretty clearly that success is not really money, but more importantly, how we are viewed. This is what most Americans would give the definition of success. This is NOT what you should think when it comes to success. Success should only be counted in what you consider it to be. If you think you have been able to achieve something great in your life, then you are successful. Don’t wait till someone tells you that you they are impressed or think they wish they could be like you. This might never happen, but this doesn’t take away what you have accomplished. Do not be like everyone else by waiting to be recognized, as this is not success. What if you were living by yourself on an island, would the word “success” be meaningless? Or the opposite, you already have everything possible and have impressed the whole world, have you reached your ultimate level of success and can not have anymore of it? The reason the feeling of success is so important is because it is a major component of happiness, which is a major topic of this site. You should revise and rethink about what drives you to be successful, and be sure that it is not dependent of others, as this may pose a barrier to you fulfillment.
