I think that the type of incentive varies depending on the target product. By target product I mean the long term backend product. You see, I believe that a sales funnel begins with the most expensive product and everything leading up to that most expensive product is simply a lead in to the most expensive product.I realize this is different than many people build their lists. They hunt for a freebie, then they hunt for a cheap first product that the freebie seekers might want, then they scramble for something more expensive that those people might want.I think that is backwards. If my top product is a $5000 training course, then my funnel should be designed to only attract people that might one day be willing to spend $5000 with me.So all of that said, I think that the initial product must be related to the niche, and be inexpensive to produce, and yet have a high perceived value.I like ebooks. I like to write a 10 page ebook that answers common questions in my niche, and use that as my giveaway. I certainly want the subject matter to be relevant to the niche, as I only want people to download it that might eventually buy my $5000 product. The bottom line is, come up with a product that is related to your niche and that is easy to giveaway. If you do have a physical product, at least require the recipient pay the shipping fee.
