What Not to Include in Your eBay Listing

Sometimes you come across an inspiring eBay listing, while other times I'm sure you've seen eBay listings and descriptions that make you click away immediately. We're always being told what we should include in our eBay listings, but what about the things we shouldn't include - either because they distract potential bidders or because ebay doesn't allow them. This article is a brief guide of what you should stay away from.

1 - Music Or Speech

Personally for me, it's a definite NO. Not only will users find it distracting, many will find it annoying and click away. Is the music really relevant to your item description. If Yes, and you really have to have any kind of music or speech in your ebay listing, make sure users have an option to turn it off.

2 - Flash

While most of us have broadband & fast connections, many users are still on slow dialup connections. Having flash on your listings will slow down the loading of your description. Again, not all users are prepared to wait around till the listing loads. Instead, keep it simple with html and images to describe your item and you won't be isolating potential bidders.

3- Javascript

Ebay does allow some kinds of Javascript, but it is quite limited as users could potentially be lured away from the eBay site. Recently, phishers have created javascript listings that redirect users to their sites where they have been prompted to enter their usernames and passwords. As the redirects have come directly from the ebay site, the phishing attempt was very successful.

Additionally, javascript containing iframes and that which creates popups are not allowed. Unless you know what your doing, its best to leave any kind of javascript out of your listings, otherwise you may fall foul of eBays policy resulting in it being pulled.

4 - Images

Images are an essential part of any description, and of course it's highly recommended that you include a few images that show the item accurately. But, always make sure they are of a reasonable size. Just because you have a 1024x768 monitor and the images appear fine for you, members viewing your listings with a 640x480 monitor resolution will find them enormous and may have to scroll across the screen to see the complete image.

5 - Policies

Make them easy to understand and try to keep any selling policies that you may have within a paragraph or two. Don't include any unnecessary policies that may confuse potential bidders.

Overall, don't complication anything more than necessary. Put yourself in the bidders shoes, and ask yourself would you be interested in your own listing.
