What Would You Do if You Positively Knew You were Going to Live in Great Health for 75 More Years?

By: Dr. Gary S. Goodman

One of the greatest excuses in the world is saying “I’m too old for law school” or to start a family, naturally or through adoption, or to pursue a Black Belt in Karate if it takes years to come into fruition.

We also put off moving to different parts of the world because we feel that we’ll probably never arrange the right circumstances to move back, that time will just slip away and we won’t be able to reverse our decisions.

But if you knew, positively and absolutely, that you could look forward not to 20, 30 or even 50 years of robust health, but to 75, what choices would you make?

Would you start writing that great novel or screenplay, or would you put it off, knowing you’d be around to craft it with your ever nimble mind, say, a cool fifty years from now?

Would you take better care of your body, or let it slip into puffy-world, knowing despite your diet and exercise regimes you’d beat the odds and be hale and hearty seven decades hence?

Would you start smoking again, as a way to deter your appetite and appear slimmer than you have in years?

Or would you quit, figuring that your lungs will have plenty of time to heal, to bask in your decision to forego the smelly sticks?

A few years ago, I had a complete physical done for insurance purposes, and my physician found absolutely nothing to complain about; a rarity, I know.

She said, “Unless you’re hit by a bus or something, you’ll probably be with us for another 30 or 40 years.”

Having been hit by a speeding car while in a crosswalk, I figured a malevolent bus was even less likely to be lurking in my future.

Well, that’s good news, I thought, but at the same time, wonderful as robust longevity is, what am I going to occupy myself with, three decades from now?

Medical breakthroughs, improvements in nutrition, exercise equipment, gyms, and consciousness are all ushering in added decades for many. What will we do with them?

Will wisdom accompany advancing age, and will we “invest well,” as one retirement company’s slogan advises?

Or, for the first time in history, will we be the first generation about whom people will remark: “You know, youth is wasted on the OLD!”
