What men should know to do

By: Valerian D

Men know a lot of things. For instance, most of them know to change the oil on their car every 3,000 miles. What they refuse to know (or ignore it) is that regular check-ups can save lives, even when no symptoms occur.

Below is a list of screenings every man should have:

1. General physical exam - Recommended every three years for men aged 20 to 39, every two years from 40 to 49 and annually after the age of 50.

2. Dental exam - At least once a year for cleaning and check-up.

3. Eye exam - If men's eyesight doesn’t need correction and you are under 50, an eye exam is recommended every three to five years. If men are over 50 or they wear corrective glasses this exam should be performed more often but at least every two years. Men with high blood pressure, diabetes or a family background of vision problems should be investigated every year.

4. Blood Pressure - Before the age of 50, men's blood pressure should be tested every two to five years. Over 50 it should be checked annually. If men have family background of high blood pressure, diabetes or stroke, heart or kidney disease, they should be examined every year no matter how old they are.

5. Testicular exam - A testicular exam should performed at every physical examination, at least every two. Self exams are recommended monthly.

6. Cholesterol - If the results are in the normal ranges cholesterol levels should be investigated every five years beginning at age 20. In case of results highest than desirable or if men belong to a family with coronary artery disease history, cholesterol should be checked more frequently.

7. Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) - Yearly after the age of 50.

8. Sigmoidoscopy - Screenings recommended every three to five years, but more frequent if you have a family history of polyps or colon cancer.

9. Electrocardiogram - Every three years after the age of 50, or after 30 if men are at high risk for heart attacks.

10. Digital rectal exam (DRE) - Every year after the age of 40.

11. Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) - Annually after age 50, but in case of family history, it’s a good idea to start earlier.

12. Tetanus booster - Once in 10 years.

13. Influenza vaccine - It is recommended every year after the age of 65, earlier if at high risk.

14. Pneumococcal vaccine - Once recommended after the age of 65, earlier if at high risk.

The choices men make about the way they live are important to their health. The doctor is a valuable resource in designing a program to keep them in good health. That’s why it’s necessary to have a personal physician that knows men's history and needs.
