What's In Your Success Toolbox?

By: Tim Connor

There are many traits and attitudes required for enduring and satisfying sales success. Ultimately your personal definition of success will become the primary factor determining whether you have achieved success or not.

There are five factors to consider when defining your success.

1) Set the bar or your requirements or measurements for success too low and although you may achieve your objectives and exceed your definition the question remains – could you have achieved more if you had just raised the bar a little higher?

2) Set the bar or the requirements or standards too high and you may live a life of frustration and disappointment because you never seem to be able to achieve your objectives or satisfy your requirements.

3) Success is not about other people’s definition of success for you. If others choose to use financial status, position or fame as their benchmarks they have no right to imply that unless you reach these same benchmarks that you are not successful.

4) Everyone’s definition is unique. It will include any combination of traits, achievements, benchmarks and degrees of satisfaction, happiness, contentment or lifestyle. To say that Mother Teresa was not a success because she was not a wealthy woman would be stupid. And, to say that a multi-millionaire is a success only because they have a lot of money would be equally ridiculous.

5) Life changes as it progresses. What may have been important to you in your twenties may no long have the allure that it once had now that you are in your forties. Changing direction does not imply failure. Letting go of a dream that no longer motivates you is not a problem (As long as you let it go for the right reasons. Letting it go because it took longer than you had thought or was more difficult than you planned are not necessarily legitimate reasons for changing direction.)

The first thing a person must determine is their personal definition of success balancing those life areas – family, career, spiritual, social, mental, community, health and financial. Once they have their established their definition it is now time to chart their journey into their personal future.

Once you have your definition clear in your mind it is now time to start the journey. You will need a number of tools in your success toolbox. One of the first tools you will want to add to your tool box is focus.

Keep in mind as you travel your success highway that you will tend to bring into your life that which is consistent with your focus. You can either focus on what is not working or what is, what you don’t have or you do, what you want or what you don’t, what you believe in or don’t. There is a great line, can’t remember where I heard it, just know I am not taking credit for it, ‘that says, be careful what you ask for, you might just get it.’

One of my favorite quotes is by Arthur Ashe. He said, “True greatness is, starting where you are, using hat you have and doing what you can.”

Most winners in life who are grateful for their blessings, focus on who they are now as well as who they are becoming what they have and can do. By the same token most losers, focus on what is missing, where they are not and on what they can’t do. Winners on the other hand learn to work with what they have. They improvise, innovate, adjust, compromise, whatever it takes to get the job done with the tools they have. A key ingredient in all leaders, winners, effective people and productive and or successful organizations is focus.
