When To Use An Exit Sign Camera To Stop Employee Theft

By: Steven Williams

Knowing when to use an exit sign camera requires a combination of planning, experience and common sense.

For example. A store owner suspects that one or more employees are stealing shoes from the stock room. During a recent audit of inventory he found a tell-tale sign.

Empty shoe boxes were found near the stock room exit behind some shelving. Since employee theft directly affects his bottom line he wants to have a security camera installed to catch the thief in the act. Although a regular security camera would serve as a deterrent, a hidden camera would make a better choice in this case

The planning stage begins with determining the exit points from the stock room. There are only two. One to the main sales floor and the other leads the rear exit. Employees have to go through a stock room exit door to remove trash etc. Most likely the thief is putting the shoes in the dumpster only to retrieve them after the store closes

Now that we how they are getting shoes outside we have to choose the correct hidden camera. Unfortunately inexperienced installers often choose the wrong type of hidden camera. They typically will choose a smoke detector camera or motion detector camera

Now I can't rule out ever using either type of camera but my experience is they just won't out perform the exit sign camera. Here's why. A smoke detector would have to be placed above the exit. How many smoke detectors have you seen above an exit? Besides you wouldn't get a clear picture of the employees face. A smoke detector camera is better suited over a cash register

The motion detector camera is a slightly better choice but unless the store has an existing alarm system it will also look out of place. Instead an exit sign camera makes more sense.

By code every exit has to have a sign in case of fire or emergency. Since the camera is hidden in the sign it can't be avoided when the employee exit's the building.

Exit signs are so common that people almost become blind to them and walk by with out even noticing it. Another advantage is that as they get closer to the sign you get an even better image of their face and what's in their hands.

Getting that prosecutable evidence is the name of the game and the exit sign camera is definitely right choice.
