Why Can We Not Cope When It Snows?

By: Eric Hartwell

We have had a very mild winter this year I only had to wear my new coat a couple of times over the last week, before that I was still in a jumper or cardigan. Then last week the weather changed, temperatures dropped and we had two days of snow and all hell let loose!

It was as if we never have snow in this country, that it was so unusual that we didn’t know how to cope, but in reality the mild weather was the anomaly and this cold icy weather was the norm. In this country we do have cold winters we do not have mild weather all year round as some places do so why are we taken by surprise each year?

I hate the winter, rain, snow and ice but I don’t stop going out or working, I resign myself to the fact that come winter I will have to wrap up warm, have the heating on full blast and put up with the constant rain. This is the same every year one way or another (I realise some winters are worse than others) and we should be ready for it. All our local schools were closed, most for both days that it snowed, some had decided to close for the two days on the first day even before we knew how bad it was going to be. This seemed too much too soon, but the children loved it!

When we were children I remember trudging to school in all manner of bad weather, it was never even mooted that schools would close. What damage or trauma did we suffer? Should I be worried about the lasting effects this could have had on me? or should I be worried about the effects this “taking the easy way out” or “any excuse for a day off” is going to have on my children? How is this going to instil a good work ethic?

Snow and bad weather should be seen as part of our normal weather not an excuse to have time off work, shut trains down, or to simply stop every day normal living how will we cope it we really have some extreme weather to cope with?
