Why It's Best to Live Alone

By: E. Raymond Rock

It’s best to live alone if we are of a spiritual nature. The Reality that we have experienced, which few have, changes us, and because of this change toward something quite ineffable, it is difficult to continue with the pretenses required in shallow relationships. Things have to be real, and when they are real, they do not always live up to the expectations of those who do not have spiritual tendencies.

Sometimes, spiritual people just need time alone, and not everybody understands this, especially those caught up in the carousel of the world. If a relationship is launched solely by hormones (and hormones are not to be taken lightly), the high of the love affair calms down much faster for the spiritual person, and the other will not understand. He or she will see it as a rejection, while it is not a rejection at all, only a return to the base of the spiritual person, the base that can never be dismissed once that turn is made away from the world.

It’s rare to find a partner with compatible spiritual tendencies. The reason for this is because many people seem spiritual on the exterior, but underneath, they are still immature in this area. While the true spiritual person will naturally tend toward solitude and silence, those not yet advanced to that level will become quickly bored after the playacting is over. This causes discontent for both parties, and it can be irreconcilable.

Living alone, of course, has its drawbacks. If the spiritual person is not yet grounded in their understanding, there can be a feeling of incompleteness and a longing to make oneself complete with the help of another. This could lead to a search for a soul mate, and the karma for searching is to find. What’s found, however, can be influenced by sexual drives, which are naturally blinding. By the time we wake up, sometimes a long term commitment is made, and then we have to hope that we change together, because it is true that everything in existence changes constantly.

The spiritual person understands that everything changes, while most others believe that things will remain the same forever. The spiritual person also knows intuitively that happiness is never constant, and that life can be expected to be discontenting many times. Also, the spiritual person knows that his or her small self is not important, because they have felt or experienced something so much greater, and because of that understanding, they express an unconditional love toward all beings, which can be misunderstood by those who are not spiritual, and jealousy can result.

So, a few things to ponder, and yes . . . it’s still best to live alone if you have spiritual tendencies. Having said that, however, if you do choose a mate, be prepared to give each other wide parameters, because the thing that is guiding the spiritual person always supersedes worldly relationships. That’s just how it is, and if the two people are mature enough to handle this, then the relationship could be a life of helping each other find truth, and picking each other up when she or he falls down, and that’s a beautiful thing.

. . . But it is rare.
