The following “interview” is fiction and is for entertainment only. Jimmy Teenager is not a real person… no matter how much he reminds you of your child.Parent: I’m here with Jimmy Teenager and Jimmy, I gotta ask you…. What do you make about all this MySpace controversy?Jimmy Teenager: Dude, it totally sucks.Parent: Now Jimmy, a lot of parents are starting to spy on their kids by monitoring what their kids are doing on the internet. What do you think about that?Jimmy Teenager: “I think that like… that violates the bill of laws or something.”Parent: “Jimmy, parents don’t want to spy but I think many of them feel it’s necessary to ensure the safety of their children.”Jimmy Teenager: “I’m cool man. I mean, just trust me. Why you gotta keep tabs on what I do? I’m a grown man!”Parent: “You’re 13. Last week you almost went to school with your left shoe on your right foot… how did you not feel that?Jimmy Teenager: “Whatever.” (walks out)The example above was just for fun. But it brings up a very real question… should you spy on your kids? The kids will tell you that there’s no need. Many parents are uneasy about adopting such a hard-lined strategy and would much rather assume that their kids are behaving themselves online. But hope is not a strategy. The only way you can truly be sure of what you’re child is doing online is adopt a strategy of complete awareness. If that means you have to spy on your kids online activities… so be it. They might hate you for it. But the alternative is unthinkable.
