"My parents think I'll get over this writing thing.""My husband doesn't really understand why I 'have' to write.""Friends will ask me why I insist on writing when I've never had anything published."Writers often have difficulty relating to those closest to them why they are so determined to continue writing. Many writers who have seen a modicum of success still are rarely thought of as a writer from those closest to them. It may be true that a prophet (or writer) is without honor in their hometown.People tend to place each other in a box they can understand and control. If, for instance, I have seen the daughter of a family friend grow into adulthood and she's found success in publishing magazine articles I still may likely view her as the little girl down the street and not as a published writer. We assign titles to others that refuses to acknowledge they might be something more than our self-appointed understanding. This happens among friends and it happens among family members. Sometimes the very ones that can and perhaps should be cheering us along tend to look at our passion as a phase we are going through. They may believe it is something that will vanish given enough time."My work is emotionally autobiographical. It has no relationship to the actual events of my life, but it reflects the emotional currents of my life. I try to work every day because you have no refuge but writing. When you're going through a period of unhappiness, a broken love affair, the death of someone you love, or some other disorder in your life, then you have no refuge but writing." - Tennessee WilliamsIt is a wonderful thing when you have family and friends that support you in your writing, but the truth is there may be times when you will not have their support in the dreams you have for your own future."Dreams are . . . illustrations from the book your soul is writing about you." - Marsha NormanThere is a reason you have a passion to use words and it would be very sad to see your passion for writing submit to the preconceived ideas of those whose vision for your is too small. As you continue to demonstrate the thrill of the written word you will find a day to rejoice when someone finally understands you have been given an unexpected gift and it becomes much easier to rejoice with you in that knowledge.Real writers do not write for validation from others, they write because they must. When that is understood validation often follows – perhaps because you are so busy chasing your dream you have forgotten to try to take something you can’t control.
