Wanna take a little quiz? I promise it's not hard. Ready? Here goes: What is the largest piece of furniture in your home? What item of furniture says volumes about your personal style? And what piece of furniture is the first thing that guests to your home usually see? The answer to all the questions above? The humble sofa. Did you guess it? Our little quiz serves to underscore the important role your sofa plays in your home - both from a decorative as well as a functional perspective. What this means is that it is very important to choose the best possible sofa for your home - very important to you, your family and also your house guests - all of whom will have to use it. That's the subject of this article: choosing the perfect sofa. No two homes are the same. As well, no two homeowners are the same - and for this reason there is no type of sofa that is 'right' for everyone. There is only the sofa that is right for YOU and your home. When you shop around for a new sofa you can examine them from a design perspective (their appearance), or from a functional perspective (how they work and their components). >From a functional point of view, you have several choices in sofas. A perennial choice is the sectional sofa. With a sectional you can move the sections all about as you please. You can also buy sleeper sofas (that unfold into a spare bed), recliner sofas, and even outdoor sofas for your porch or deck area outside. It is best to consider functional aspects first: what you will you need your sofa for? What will you need it to do (if anything)? Where will it be used - and how often? And just how much space do you have? The fact is that once you have a handle on the TYPE of sofa that you need, you can then move on to consider design options. Once you have a handle on the type of sofa that you need, you can now move on to some design considerations. Basically you have two choices: traditional or contemporary styling. There are, of course, endless variations on these two, but nearly every sofa you see can be placed into one of these two categories. A couple of recommendations: Always match your sofa style to your overall room style. If your room decor is contemporary, make sure your sofa is as well. If your room is decorated in a traditional flavor, then choose a sofa for it that keeps to that same design scheme. Clashing styles hurt my eyes! A few remaining recommendations: If you need extra bed space occasionally, consider buying a sleeper sofa. If you are outfitting a den or playroom, and you have kids (or messy husbands), make sure that you buy one that is sturdy enough to handle the rough-and-tumble life. Kids inevitably turn sofas into trampolines - so make sure your sofa can handle it! As always, buy furniture from qualified, reliable dealers. Get a good warranty. Make sure your sofa is made from quality woods and fabrics - not some piece of crap that is simply stapled together. Pick a good one, and care for it -- and your sofa will give you many years of faithful service.
