You Will Know A Tree By Its Fruit! - Picking the "Ripe" MLM

By their fruit you will recognize them. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Fortunately in the orchard of MLM’s, one rotten apple does not necessarily to spoil the entire barrel. Here we will see what the marks of a good MLM, or network marketing company are, verses the bad, and you’ll be armed with the crucial questions that will help you decide what’s “ripe” for you.

The ‘Word’ says, “By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.” - NIV

Per the Wikipedia, in a typical multi-level marketing (MLM), or network marketing arrangement, individuals are associated with a parent company as an independent contractor, or franchisee, and are compensated based on their sales of products or service, as well as the sales achieved by those they bring into the business. This is like many franchise companies where royalties are paid from the sales of individual franchise operations to the franchiser, as well as to an area or region manager.

Unfortunately, many MLMs stray from legitimacy and fall in to what is known as illegal pyramid or Ponzi scheme. A pyramid scheme is a non-sustainable business model that involves the exchange of money primarily for enrolling other people into the scheme, usually without any product or service being delivered. A Ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment operation that involves paying abnormally high returns ("profits") to investors out of the money paid in by subsequent investors, rather than from net revenues generated by any real business, named after Charles Ponzi.

Fortunately in the orchard of MLM’s, one rotten apple does not necessarily to spoil the entire barrel. Setting the flawed aside, what are the marks of a good MLM, or network marketing company? It’s easier to discern than you think, so ask yourself the following:

· Is the company financially stable, and has it withstood the test of time?
· Does the company have legitimate, marketable products that you can stand behind?
· Does the MLM actively, and regularly train, with experienced & knowledgeable staff, their sales force and aspiring entrepreneurs?
· What is the growth potential of the company and its products?
· Does the MLM have a fair and well paying compensation plan?

Also, make sure to ask yourself, “How much time do you have on your hands?” If you’re working another job, an active mom, or just plain busy, but want to make a little extra on the side, then you’ll need to employ what is called the “KISS” method (keep it simple stupid), to assess the company, and in the marketing system you choose. I recommend sticking with automated, on-line systems & products that are well promoted, ship directly, and require minimal maintenance.

Lastly, do you have realistic expectations? Nothing ventured, nothing gained; no sweat, no glory; garbage in, garbage out; one reaps what one sews; before you invest, investigate. I like the way Benjamin Franklin put it best, “He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.” Need I say anymore?
