“What do you tell people,” one self development guru asked another, “when they tell you that they don’t know what they want?” “I tell them,” the second one said, “that they’re liars.” As someone who spent long years aching to find a dream to give direction to my life, I was shocked by hearing his answer. Had you asked me what I wanted a couple years ago, I would honestly have been unable to tell you. For me, the response would have been no lie, but a description of how stuck I was in trying to find my dream. Now, as I look back over my years of struggle, I can understand his answer. The clues to the dream that would eventually light my life were all around me. But I was so lost in my frustration, that I certainly couldn’t see them. If you’re struggling to identify the path for your life that will fill you with passion and joy, I empathize! Let me share some suggestions that may help. First, give up the struggle. It’s not getting you anywhere and by focusing on your inability to find your dream, you’re only making it more invisible to yourself. Instead of telling yourself that you can’t figure out what you want, imagine that your dream is already impacting your life as it narrows down its search for exactly the right person to star in it. Imagine that your current circumstances are a training ground, and pour yourself into whatever work occupies you right now with as much energy as you possibly can. See it as a means for honing skills that you’ll use later on, and work with enthusiasm, being the best you can be at it right now. As you work, imagine your dream is dispatching scouts to see what talent is out there; one of them may be checking you out at any moment. Meanwhile, create a little advertising, a little self-promotion, to let your dream know what you have to offer. Get a little notebook that you can carry around and start making notes about things you enjoy and do well. In addition to sending out signals to your dream that say “I’m your man!” by writing down your strong points, you’re preparing to recognize opportunity when it knocks. Don’t gloss over that last suggestion. The basic premise of the law of attraction is that like attracts like. So know what kinds of energy you most enjoy. Think about the kind of environment you prefer: indoors or out? Quiet or buzzing with activity? Do you enjoy working independently or with a team? Do you like being in charge, or would you prefer to have some direction? Do you like physical or mental work more? Are you more creative or analytical? Let yourself enjoy making this inventory. Add to it whenever some new idea enters your mind. By forming a clear picture of what you enjoy--what kinds of activities you prefer, what kinds of things draw your interest, what abilities you like using, what skills and talents you have--you really are clearing away interference that could keep you from hearing your dream’s call. Focusing on your interests, strengths and abilities will not only expand your sense of self worth, but will also allow you to appreciate more deeply how rich your already life is right now. Your dream is looking for someone who can shine in its key role, and nothing polishes you brighter than gratitude for what you already have. Sooner or later, your dream will call you. It may show itself to you gradually, unfolding perhaps, as a revelation from within your self-inventory. Or it may come as a total surprise, as an invitation from a stranger, a chance meeting at work or at a social event. It may show up as junk mail, or on a billboard. You might hear it in a song lyric or come across it while you’re reading a magazine. It may show up next week, or it may wait for years while you gather the experience you’ll need to fulfill it when it arrives. You needn’t seek it; you need only to prepare and to keep the lines clear for its call. Cultivate your strengths and be grateful for the riches of the present. Create the finest self you can envision. Because if you build you, your dream will come.
