Your Wedding and the Bridesmaids

It is a given that the stars in any wedding event are the bride and the groom. They are the very center of the occasion so all eyes are understandably on them. From the time they walk down the aisle, to the time when they have exchanged vows, to the time when they sealed the solemn ceremony with a kiss, up until the wedding reception, the bride and the groom remain in the spotlight. But the bridesmaids also play a significant part in the success of your wedding.

Support Casting

There are always supporting roles in a wedding event, however. One such role is that of the bridesmaids. Bridesmaids are chosen mostly because of their association with the bride. They’re usually relatives and/or close friends of the bride.

Bridesmaids’ Traditional Role

It is fascinating to note that before, bridesmaids wore gowns that were as ostentatious and embellished as the gown the bride wore to her wedding. In fact, the bridesmaids’ dresses were exactly identical to the bride’s dress.

This would seem inconceivable today, wouldn’t it? After all, the bride would certainly wish to stand out on her wedding day, right? Apparently, though, brides of long ago had no such wish. If they stood out, they might be kidnapped by enemy tribes or clans. Thus, bridesmaids had to look just like the bride on the day of the wedding to confuse would-be abductors. For this same reason it was preferable to have more than one bridesmaid.

Bridesmaids’ Changing Skin

The times of extreme caution has long passed and the bride now wishes to truly stand out. Thus, the bride usually wears white now. However, the bridesmaids have retained the colorful dresses of days gone by, though they are usually more simply designed nowadays.

Don’t forget to think about and include the bridesmaids in all aspects of the wedding especially on your special day. They have an important role to play at all stages.
