Clergy Sexual Child Abuse-Myths Myths regarding Catholic Priests and sexual child abuse abound. The most damaging myth is that Catholic clergy sexual child abuse is more prevalent than in other religious sects. This myth perpetuates a sense of false safety for these families. Senator Mark Foley's Sexual Predatory Behavior with Under-age Boys Categorized—Political Blunder To categorize Foley's sexual solicitation of under-age boys as a political blunder is reckless, reprehensible, irresponsible and inexcusable.Although, Foley didn't violate any House Ethics rules, he committed a sexual capital crime against a minor. Foley's behavior was an egregious crime against a minor. The fact Mr. Foley has yet to be arrested is beyond comprehension. Sexual Abuse—Covert (subtle) Forms Covert sexual abuse is more insidious than blatant sexual abuse. Thus, identifying it is more difficult because the sexual nature of the action is disguised. The sex offender acts as if she/he is doing something non-sexual, when in fact she/he is being sexual. The betrayal then becomes two-fold. The child is not only abused, but also tricked or deceived about the experience. Sex Offenders Rationalize Their Behavior Sex offenders rationalize and/or minimize their actions as well as the consequences to him or herself and to his or her victims. Sex offenders convince themselves the child won’t remember, or they justify to themselves that they are entitled because ________. They deny any responsibility to the child if the child does remember the abuse. Setting the Record Straight Regarding Sex Offenders To set the record straight the fact, Representative Mark Foley (R-FL) is a sexual abuse survivor is no surprise. All sex offenders--Pedophile, Ephebophiles and rapists are sexual and/or physical abuse survivors. While this does not condone their behavior, it explains what prompts them to act out sexually.
