  • Give Serendipity a Chance
The process of taking a few wrong turns or saying you are not available to go with the crowd to the business dinner opens up a world of possibilities ranging from the discovery of a new neighborhood to touching the massive bricks making up sections of the Great Wall. These changes in our routines added up over time will form a habit allowing new ideas to seep into your consciousness and innovation to occur in your organization. New innovative ideas will occur when you take the time to alter your perceptions of a place and at the same time this will improve the connection you have to yourself.
  • Practicing Creativity
How do you practice your creativity? You can start by picking up a disposable camera and taking a few photographs around town or in your office. It is through the eye of the lens that you start to see the world in a different and more creative way. The next time you are asked what you got on your SAT test, pull out a camera and start taking some pictures instead. Isn’t the creative approach to diffusing a difficult situation more valuable?
  • Coffee for Character
In order to develop your character while traveling, you need to do the following. Build in buffer time before and after your meetings so that you can engage in at least one non-work activity. This buffer time needs to be as important as any other high-priority work-related activity, so resist the temptation to schedule another meeting in this time. I allow a half-day to a full day for this buffer time depending upon the location.
