  • The Way It Really Is
At first I didn't want to stay after an incredible lecture at National Geographic, and I motioned to my wife that we ought to be leaving. After taking two steps toward the exit, I turned suddenly and said to my wife, "I need to buy photographer Sam Abel's book and get him to sign it. Besides, it is my birthday!" I knew I didn't just want to say hello and only get his signature, so I tried to think of something clever to say. I was right in front of him. He smiled at me, and his eyes conveyed a calmness and the depth of an artist. I blurted out, "which photograph in your book would help make me a better photographer?"
  • The Pros and Cons of Vibration Reduction
Remember that while you might have VR, it is a 'crapshoot.' VR technology aids in the guessing game of compensating for movement. Some of your photos will be sharper, but others will be about the same. Don't expect that every photograph will be perfect when employing VR. You still need to be competent enough to take good photographs in the first place. The idea is to take a lot of photographs (i.e. bracketing) in low light or in challenging light situations. The more photographs you have from which to choose, the better your odds of finding that perfect shot. This strategy is not to be confused with some photographers putting their DSLR camera on a high frame rate and hoping for one 'lucky' shot.
  • Seeing Without A Camera
It is through the art of seeing without a camera that we realize that rules, labels and dominant ideas can become barriers to our creativity. With practice, you will start to actively search for new and different ways to look at the world. Practicing seeing without a camera will get you out of your routines. You may just welcome the chance encounter that will open up endless possibilities. Everything we see all around us once started as an idea. How can you come up with new ideas if you aren't seeing? When you start to see, you will be more creative and you will have more balance and happiness in your life.
  • Comparing Digital and Film
Digital is a great medium, but keep in mind the hidden costs and time that you will need to invest in order to produce the anticipated end result. This includes the cost of your camera and accessories and the time it will take to work in your digital work flow.
